Humane Wildlife Control in NYC, Long Island, and New JerseyMay people don't ordinarily associate the term "wildlife" with heavily urbanized areas such as New York City, Long Island, and New Jersey. But as human development continues to encroach upon the natural habitats of animals such as raccoons, opossums, squirrels, skunks, and bats, these animals are brought into closer contact with humans and our homes and businesses, where they sometimes create a nuisance or health hazard. What Does the Term "Nuisance Wildlife" mean?Nuisance wildlife is a catch-all term applied to animals whose presence in a given location is creating a problem, but who are not technically classified as "pests." Unlike pests, who can be killed by any lawful means simply by virtue of their existence in an area, nuisance animals are usually controlled by non-lethal means such as trapping, habitat modification, exclusion, or fright devices. In general, nuisance animals are only killed when an individual animal is sick or injured in such a way that they present a health hazard or can no longer survive in the wild, when the animal has a history of attacking humans or domestic animals, or under policies issued by government agencies to deal with temporary situations (such as extreme overpopulation of certain species or epizoonoses of rabies or other diseases). Even then, both law and industry ethics require that such animals be humanely euthenized, using methods that are least likely to cause pain or distress.
